For as long as there has been a Porsche Cayman, fans have accused the automaker of limiting its performance in the name of protecting the 911. And while the “Cayman complex” has its merits, Porsche is getting ready to change that notion with the new GT4 RS. The track-oriented sports car should arrive next year, and this is everything we know so far.

It Will Be Properly Powerful

Like the Cayman GT4 on which it’s based, the GT4 RS is slated to arrive with a 4.0-liter flat-six engine behind the driver. The standard GT4’s motor is good for 414 hp and 309 lb-ft of torque, but the RS is expected to arrive with around 500 hp. As with the other RS models in the range, expect the power bump to come from new hardware aimed at improving reliability and durability on track, as was confirmed by Car Magazine. That is to say that the engine itself won’t be directly borrowed from the 911 GT3 or GT3 RS, but rather a tweaked version on the unit found in the current Cayman model. That engine got its start in life as the 3.0-liter turbo motor found in the non-GT 992 models, before losing the forced induction and gaining some displacement. As far as the gearbox goes, a PDK automatic is a surefire bet. Could there be a manual option? It’s not impossible, but as all RS-labeled Porsches are PDK-only, it might be a longshot.

More Intense Aero Treatments

Like any proper RS model, the upgraded Cayman GT4 RS will utilize a more extreme aero package that its less-potent sibling. Prototypes sightings around the Nürburgring, like those shared by Automotive Mike, have featured a reworked front lip, new NACA ducting on the hood, and fender vents hidden beneath black tape. Furthermore, the GT4 RS appears to be learning from the new GT3 models, as it features a large swan-neck rear wing. This should help clean up the airflow over the car and ensure maximum downforce is on offer for track work.

A Sorted Chassis

Nobody has accused the Cayman GT4 of having an insufficient chassis. The front axle and most of the rear components are already lifted directly from the GT3. That said, expect the Cayman GT4 RS to arrive with even more motorsports equipment installed. The car itself should be lower and stiffer than the standard model, thanks in part to a modified suspension set-up. The brakes will be upgraded as well, with carbon ceramic rotors likely coming as an option. As Motor1 has pointed out, prototypes have been spotted with both five-lug and center-lock wheels, though the latter are more inline with the RS lineup. Regardless of the wheel design, expect super sticky rubber to help put that suspension system to the ground. The Cayman GT4 is also expected to shed a few pounds during the RS conversion, which is always a welcomed change.

It Won’t Be Cheap

In keeping with the RS tradition, the Cayman GT4 RS is not going to be a budget-friendly vehicle. The honed mid-engined sports car is rumored to arrive on the market with a base price of about $130,000, according to Car and Driver. That is quite a bit more than the $100,200 starting price of the standard GT4 model, but not an unexpected jump by any means. That price point is an interesting one however, as it falls just shy of the $136,700 Porsche is asking for the new 911 Carrera GTS .

It Should Be A 2022 Model

We’ve seen the Porsche Cayman GT4 RS testing at the Nürburgring since the fall of 2019. Despite the ongoing pandemic-related issues the auto industry is facing, it is expected that the new RS will arrive in late 2021 before going on sale as a 2022 model. This is of course liable to change, though we wouldn’t expect to have to wait much longer to get to know the hottest Cayman.
