Charles Leclerc set to extend with Ferrari until 2026

According to journalist Leo Turrini, Charles Leclerc will reaffirm his commitment to Ferrari by signing a new contract until 2026.

Leclerc, a graduate of the Ferrari Driver Academy, has become a prized asset for the team since joining back in 2019 and since then has played a key role in the Scuderia’s recovery up the grid.

Although 2021 has been a vast improvement upon 2020, Ferrari are yet to return to being a consistent threat for race wins – something they hope will be achievable by 2022.

And Leclerc has bought into this aim, with this set to be further emphasised by his signature on a new contract which will tie him down at Ferrari until 2026.

“It is nice to know Charles has confidentially expressed the desire to extend the contract that binds him to Ferrari until the end of 2026,” Turrini wrote on the Resto del Carlino.

“The current agreement expires in 2024.

“Given that, with an understatement, I could define the current performance of the red car as less than exciting, Leclerc evidently believes the conditions are right for him to realise his big dream, to become champion with the Prancing Horse.

“We’ll see.”

Leclerc, 23, has two race wins to his name as a Ferrari driver, those coming back-to-back in 2019 at the Belgian and Italian Grands Prix.

The Monegasque driver also has nine pole positions under his belt in Ferrari colours.

Recently he was linked with a potential switch to Red Bull before Sergio Perez was confirmed for 2022, but Leclerc dismissed the speculation that he was discontent with Ferrari’s form as “nonsense”.

“The rumours about my hypothetical discontent are all nonsense,” he said, quoted by Italy 24 News.

“I am calm at Maranello and there is a good synergy with Carlos Sainz. This allows us to work better and to concentrate as much as possible on a project in which I firmly believe.

“Lately we have managed to take the right path, managing to make a lot of progress compared to last season.”
