The C8 Chevy Corvette is already ridiculously quick. Even with the base engine, it’ll hit 60 in under 3 seconds. Yet that’s not enough speed for Chevy, so we’ll likely see Z06 and ZR1 variants in the near future. And if the company they keep is any indication, they should be quite quick.

They sound pretty mean.

In a new video posted by Corvette Blogger, you can see a fleet of prototypes parked at a hotel in Ohio. They’re covered in camouflage and, initially, tarps. But when you peak past that, you see quad, center-mounted exhausts that help distinguish them from the normal C8 and its more conventionally placed quad pipes. Plus, the fact that they’re heavily camo’d and protected confirms that they’re something special. But the most interesting vehicles in the video are the two cars Chevy has brought along on the drive: a Ferrari 458 Italia and a Porsche 911 GT2 RS.

Automakers frequently buy competitor vehicles to benchmark upcoming products again. Often, you can tell a lot about an upcoming car and how the automaker will position it based on what they compare it to. With benchmarks like this, it’s safe to say that the C8 Z06 is coming for the throne. After all, the 911 GT2 RS is one of the quickest cars to ever lap the Nürburgring.

The Ferrari might be there for another reason. It’s long since been replaced by two newer generations of mid-engine Ferraris, so it’s far from the pinnacle of prancing horse performance. But back when another Detroit automaker was working on its own flat-plane-crank V-8, the man in charge of noise, vibration, and harshness for the Shelby GT350 benchmarked the 458 as the best-sounding flat-plane V-8 car. Based on rumors and the sharp bite of the prototype’s exhaust, we might have further evidence here that Chevy will launch a flat-plane-crank V-8, like the one in the C8.R race car, for the upcoming Corvette Z06. With that sort of high-revving mill, expect it to be even more exciting than the standard car.
