  • A former fintech entrepreneur’s new company, Everrati, is turning classic cars into Tesla-powered EVs.
  • Everrati’s staff includes people who formerly worked at brands like McLaren and Jaguar Land Rover.
  • Everrati creates Porsche 911 EVs right now, but the company wants to expand to other models.

Former fintech entrepreneur Justin Lunny is looking to keep old sports cars on the road for as long as he possibly can. A devoted gearhead, Lunny’s passion for cars has led him to swapping gas for electricity with new company Everrati.

Everrati’s model is to take a classic, much loved model and swap in an electric powertrain. Legislation all over the world is changing to make internal-combustion engines obsolete, but Lunny doesn’t want to see the huge variety of fantastic classics out there be put to pasture. In a similar vein to UK firm Lunaz Design, Everrati will take your classic and give it a new lease on life. The company’s working on ’89 to ’93 Porsche 911s (called the “964” generation) for now, but expansion is on the way.

But why go through the trouble to put new technology in old cars? Lunny’s daughter was a big push.

“My daughter was seven,” Lunny told Insider. “She used to come home, go to bed, wake up screaming, worrying about the world flooding, climate change. She’d been told by a teacher that these things are happening. And that’s quite scary.”

Lunny’s second big kick was a royal wedding. He saw Jaguar’s E-Type Zero EV used at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s ceremony and realized those are the kind of cars he should be creating, but what Lunny saw in the EV-conversion space when he started Everrati was a touch worrying.

“There were people out there, let’s be honest, tearing Nissan Leafs apart and trying to fit it in whatever,” Lunny said. “Things like used batteries are a real no-no for us.”

With engineering, Everrati isn’t a shady back-alley operation. The team is from the likes of McLaren, Jaguar Land Rover, and more. Each car is extensively tested and set up before anyone outside of the company gets a look at it.

Everrati’s Porsche 911 comes with a more tried and tested setup that’ll make a certain group of EV fans very happy: a Tesla powertrain with nickel battery cells. To keep it handling as it should, there’s a differential made by Quaife, a British automotive supplier that specializes in high-performance and race-car parts.

Some may find its 150-mile range a little on the low side, but Everrati considers its creation a car you drive for fun, not a long-distance tourer, so range shouldn’t be an issue. More range means more batteries, and that’s not good for Everrati’s goals.

“We’d rather get the car feeling like it should than doing another 50 miles of range,” Lunny said, referring to the Porsche 911’s oft-praised driving characteristics – with an engine at the rear, its handling is notably different to more traditional cars, which is something Porsche purists love. “We don’t want to overweigh it.”

Where others, like Lunaz Design, are beautifully restoring classics from way back, Everrati’s beat is more modern. Bedroom-wall poster cars for people of all ages.

Lunny knows that what’s iconic to him – a 964-generation Porsche 911 – may not be to someone else. That doesn’t mean to say his company can’t electrify someone else’s idea of an icon.

“We’ve got clients saying, ‘Look, could you look at my Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster? Could you look at my Aston Martin DB4?'” Lunny said. “Our approach is very much that we will do bespoke work for ultra-high-net-worth, high-net-worth car owners.

“And, of course, once you’ve done a DB4, we can do it as a series. So, effectively, they’re in some ways helping us..”

If battery tech moves on, Everrati can upgrade its componentry. Or if you want to put a gas motor back, the conversion is fully reversible – though Lunny said Everrati can turn your Porsche’s old engine into a coffee table if you’d like.
