A Maserati reported stolen in New York wound up at the center of a chase involving officers from the North Caldwell and Verona police departments early this morning.

It began around 5:20 a.m., when North Caldwell police observed the car moving erratically near Central Avenue and East Greenbrook Road. An officer attempted to stop the car, but police said it fled at a high rate of speed. The driver crashed the car through the back gate at the Four Seasons housing development and tried to go off-road to avoid being caught.

Somehow, the car got back to Bloomfield Avenue, and Verona Police picked up the chase. As the car was approaching Montclair, all the passengers bailed out, leaving a driverless car drifting in the roadway and the whole thing caught on a Verona Police dash camera. A North Caldwell officer brought the car to a stop while Verona Officers Saldutto and Pami pursued the suspects on foot. The driver and two passengers were all eventually caught.

“This video clip is a snapshot of the danger officers and the public face as a result of stolen motor vehicles,” the Verona Police said on social media today. “Please remember to do your part by locking your car and removing the key fobs. The Verona Police will be doing our part.”
