Although we’ve gotten it a bit late, CAR journalist Nikesh Kooverjee has been given the opportunity to sample the heroic Porsche 911 GT2 RS PDK. Using a twin-turbocharged 3,8-litre flat-six engine, it delivers 515 kW and 750 N.m of torque to the rear wheels and claims a 0-100 km/h time of 2,8 seconds. The GT2 RS was launched in 2018 with a starting price of R4 411 000; a little bit less than current asking prices on the used market.
The Stuttgart-based automaker used the 3,8-litre engine from the 911 Turbo S as a base, but added heftier turbochargers and a revised cooling system that sprays the charge-air cooler with water once temperatures increase past a certain point. Engineers also uprated the seven-speed double-clutch transmission and developed a new exhaust system fashioned from extra-lightweight titanium.
Ceramic brakes come standard, while the front wings, wheel housing vents, side-mirror caps, air intakes on the rear side sections and parts of the rear end are fashioned from carbon-fibre reinforced plastic, as are many of the interior components. The bonnet is also made from carbon to render the vehicle as lightweight as possible, while the standard trim roof is made from magnesium.
The track-focused supercar boasts a claimed overall mass of 1 470 kg with a full tank. Not light enough for you? Well, there’s was the optional Weissach package, which provided a weight saving of some 30 kg courtesy of additional carbon-fibre reinforced plastic, titanium and other lightweight elements (from the carbon anti-roll bars to the magnesium wheels). Inside the 911 GT2 RS you’ll find swathes of red Alcantara, black leather yet more carbon-weave trim.
The 991 GT2 RS is not only the most powerful production 911 to date but the quickest Neunelfer to ever lap the testing Nürburgring Nordschleife. The 911 GT2 RS completed the 20,6 kilometre lap in a mere 6 minutes and 47,3 seconds, beating Porsche’s own target of “less than” 7 minutes and 5 seconds by 17,7 seconds, and breaking the lap record for production cars. The Porsche now places third. The Lamborghini Aventador SVJ recorded a time of 6 minutes and 44,97 one year later. Mercedes-AMG’s GT Black Series now holds the title, with the Three-pointed Star’s most-powerful V8 supercar registering a time of 6 minutes and 43,61 seconds.
