Porsche’s 964-generation 911 ended with a stunning group of Turbo 3.6 variants that largely took advantage of a power-increasing “X88” option. Many of these were the Turbo S cars, a low-production variety of mostly slant-nosed cars distinct to three different domestic markets. This one, however, is a rare X88-equipped 3.6 Turbo with a standard nose. And it was custom-ordered in a Horizon Blue Metallic with a blue interior by the Sultan of Brunei, making it one-of-one among 3.6 Turbos.
Oh, and its current owner is 2009 Formula 1 world champion Jenson Button.
All of that adds up to a particularly special 911 with a particularly special history. Unlike the slant-nosed 3.6 Turbo S cars, this X88-equipped 964 does not immediately declare how special it is to the world. However, this car is just as quick as those ultra-limited machines, their equal as the ultimate example of the 964-generation 911 and, by extent, one of the greatest air-cooled Porsches ever made.
While the sheer size and significance of the Sultan of Brunei’s collection means that a few cars from it trickle out into the general public, a car owned by any former World Champion is something even more rare. Button’s collection is particularly noteworthy; at one point, this 964 Turbo 3.6 could have shared garage space with his McLaren P1 and Carrera GT.
Button has listed the car with no reserve on Collecting Cars, where the auction is set to continue through Thursday. At the time of writing, the car has been bid just past the equivalent of $275,000.
